PHILADELPHIA, PA— The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recently honored forty-eight grantees representing some of the finest healthcare, community and family organizations from throughout their thirteen-county service area.  The Komen Philadelphia Affiliate distributed of $2,581,066 in grants to support breast health education, awareness, screening, treatment and support that will be implemented in 2008-2009.  Planned Parenthood of Delaware, based in Wilmington, received an Education/Support Grant for their Expanding Breast Health in Delaware program.

“Planned Parenthood of Delaware represents the grassroots efforts that make Susan G. Komen for the Cure a leader in the international breast cancer movement,” said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  “Teams from all our grantees are out in their communities every day bringing the cure—in the form of early detection, education, and other support services—to women most in need.”

“We are very proud to be able to offer such vital health care services to women thanks in part to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, for the third year in a row,” stated Dequila Hurford, VP of Patient Services for Planned Parenthood of Delaware.  “We will continue to provide women with necessary breast exams and educate them about the importance of early detection.”

The Planned Parenthood of Delaware program, titled Expanding Breast Health in Delaware, provides educational outreach and clinical breast examinations for medically underserved women in the city of Wilmington (New Castle County), Kent and Sussex Counties.  Goals include to: increase enrollment in Screening for Life so that women can have a permanent payment mechanism for future exams; educate women one-on-one; provide clinical breast exams and mammogram prescriptions; and develop a media campaign to provide information about community breast health resources.

Through their grant review process, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate strives to generate a grantee family offering a vast diversity in terms of services offered, groups served and geography.  The 2008-2009 grantee list includes programs with outreach to individuals of diverse ages, life styles and cultures, spanning the Komen Philadelphia service area of:  Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties, PA; Camden County, NJ; and Kent, New Castle and Sussex counties, DE.

The grant money is a result of Komen Philadelphia Affiliate fund-raising efforts throughout 2007, the biggest contributor being the 17th Annual Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure.®  Seventy-five percent of the total monies raised through the Race stays in the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate’s 13-county service area to support education, screening and treatment initiatives—the Grant recipients. The remaining funds go towards the Komen National Research Grant Program.

A complete list of 2008-2009 grantees and funded programs, as well as more information on the Komen Grant Program, and the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate can be obtained at www.KomenPhiladelphia.org, or by contacting the Affiliate office: 215-238-8900 (phone), 215-238-1419 (fax), info@komenphiladephia.org.
